Religiosity and Misanthropy across the Racial and Ethnic Divide

The systematic study of misanthropy, the lack trust in humanity, has proliferated over last 30 years. One prominent line research details racial and ethnic disparities levels but pays little attention to role religiosity, while another focuses on religiosity its impact with only scant race ethnicity. Little attempt been made synthesize these two strands literature address an important unanswered question: Does association between misanthropy vary by group? To answer this question, we pooled data from General Social Survey (GSS, 2000–2018). Among other things, find stark differences Blacks Whites terms effect misanthropy. Latinos who attend religious services weekly (social religiosity) have significantly higher than others, are less likely be misanthropic. An takeaway is that service attendance (a type social capital) associated feelings for all groups (albeit opposite directions versus Whites), rather personal acts prayer (individual religiosity). When it comes conclude religion works differently minorities compared Whites. We discuss implications our findings future research.
